'Honoring Our Heroes' theme for Veterans Day program

The North Fayette Valley Class of 2020 and National Honor Society is inviting the public to high school Veterans Day program, “Honoring Our Heroes”, Monday, Nov. 11, 10 a.m., at the PAC.

The presentation of colors will start the program and there will also be performances by the High School Band and the High School Chorus.

The keynote speaker this year is Travis Fleshner, the superintendent at Union Community School District.

A graduate of North Fayette High School in 1989, Fleshner completed his undergraduate degree in physical education and coaching, earned a Master of Arts Degree in Education and Advanced Certificate in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Iowa.  

While serving as the  high school physical education teacher and head football coach at Turkey Valley Community School District, he was ordered to active duty with Bravo Company 389th Engineer.  Upon returning from a 15-month deployment in Iraq, Travis chose to pursue school administration.  

He and his wife Stacy and their two sons, Hunter and Tyson, moved to the Tri-County Community School District located in Thornburg, where he served as the 7-12 principal during the 2004-2005 school year.   In 2005, He accepted an offer to serve as the 9-12 principal at Union High School.  Currently, he is entering his fourth year as superintendent of the Union Community School District serving the communities of La Porte City and Dysart. 

During his 21 years military career, 1SG Fleshner has had the opportunity to work with hundreds of soldiers and travel to several foreign countries supporting his unit’s engineering missions.  Those countries include Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Germany, Kuwait,  and Iraq.  

Later that day there will be another Veterans Day program at the Middle School in Elgin, starting at 1:30 p.m.

The speakers will be Isaiah and Kassie Stansbery.   The Clermont, Elgin, and Wadena Legions will all be participating.

The Fayette Elementary will be having a program at 9 a.m.

The guest speaker will be Alan Friedhoff of West Union. He served in the Army from 1969 to 1970 as a member of the military police at Fort Polk, La.

The Fayette Legion Post will be participating in that event.
